Enhancing the awareness on marine plant ecosystems, the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) conducted a beach cleaning programme and planted mangrove saplings in the Talaimannar and Nachchikuda areas, yesterday (26 July).

The SLN being a key organization playing a part for the protection of mangrove ecosystems, launched this mangrove planting programme in conjunction with the International Mangrove Day under the auspices of Commander North Central Naval Area Rear Admiral Bandula Senarathna.

Mangroves play a pivotal role in the coastal ecosystems, fetching benefits to the regional community and the country as a whole.

The event was held adhering to COVID-19 protocols in force due to pandemic concerns and it was attended by a limited group of naval personnel, the SLN said.
