Fire at ‘Lover’s Leap’

An area surrounding the tourist hot-spot ‘Lover’s Leap’ Waterfall in Nuwaraeliya has been destroyed in a fire.

The Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council (MC) Fire Brigade said that about an acre of the Nuwara Eliya Hawa Eliya Reserve near the Lover’s Leap Waterfall has been destroyed by a fire that erupted on Saturday.

Residents of Nuwara Eliya, too, said that most of the tourists in Nuwara Eliya during the weekends and school holidays visit the fall and any of the them who visited the area may have set fire to the reserve.

Officers of the Nuwara Eliya MC Fire Brigade with the assistance of the residents controlled the fire.

Wildfires are rampant in the upcountry plantation reserves in the prevalent dry weather condition.
